Mallorca Triathlon Camp 2025

Mallorca 2025  Glucose, Nutrition and Sport Management

Day 1:

Successfully landed in Mallorca.

Sport: Afternoon ride, 40 km to Cap Formentor.

After, waking up at 5 am, having slept barley 4 hours and having travelled for half a day, I collected my energy to join the group for an easy spin, to test the bike and the legs.

Given my body tiredness, this was more challenging than I thought.

I was recovering from a sore throat and my glucose levels were high, screaming "Stop".

How do I manage to stop? I don't.

The challenges were multiples for facing this first ride.

First of all, the timing was not great, as it was right after a late lunch, therefore, couple of units of active insulin were still in my body.

Most important thing I made sure, as to pack enough gels and bananas in case of hypoglycemia.

Surprisingly, this was not the case, as I ride for 2 hours with hyperglycemia.

Analysing the data back, this made sense as my organism is still recovering from the illness.

Mallorca day 2

Fasting glucose 110 mg/dL

70 km to Cap Formentor

Diabetes Management:

Breakfast: 1 units

1 pancake and

Greek yogurt

Integration: after 2 hours 30g bread 20g protein

Insulin:1 unit

Lunch:2 units green vegetables and carbohydrates

Return glucose:190 mg/dL

A ride full of unexpected stops and breaks, the worst for a diabetic planning person.

With Diabetes everything has to be planned to the minute, to avoid either hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia.

This could result crazy, or obsessive for the people around, but what I can do?

It's just my life.

The ride was easy and steady, although still 1000 meter elevation gain. Not bad for the first proper day.

Day 3

It was meant to be an easy ride , turned out to be a challenging day.

We split up in 2 groups for safety reason, as it is not easy, not safe to ride with more than 6 people.

After the split, the ride was smooth with moment of push uphill.

The challenging hill was after the juice stop, which came perfectly for my glucose value .

Let's start from the beginning

Fasting glucose 140 mg/dL

Breakfast Nutrition

  • 1 pancake
  • 1 spoon Greek yogurt
  • 20g cheese 20g ham
  • 3 biscuits with the Tea

Insulin: 1 unit

Nutrition: Before leaving a fruit

Starting glucose: 140 mg/dL

Sport: 90 km bike ride inside the Island to Petra , with 800 m elevation gain

Integration: 1 orange juice and a Sandwich

Glucose at the return :160 mg/dL

Day 4

130 km with 2500 m elevation gain

Challenge accepted

Spoiler alert: Dangerous high glucose

Nausea and tiredness

Hours on the bike: 9 (9.30 am Till 18.30)

Have you done it?

If yes, how do you integrate?

How do you integrate, manage fatigue with Diabetes?

Glucose at fasting: 100 mg/dL

Glucose at the beginning of the ride: 150 mg/dL (After 40 minutes  from the start)

The first integration with a banana

Second integration after 2h with a bar and a gel

The glucose increases and I inject 1 unit of insulin

3 main climbs of 5 km each

Half way stop for lunch where I correct with 1 unit of insulin

And back on the road for the main challenge, 14 km climb 💪

Glucose drops as expected and I integrate with a gel

The glucose spikes up again,

After a rollercoaster of up and down which absolutely drains me, I am done for the day.

Day 5

Rest day

Guess what ..

Massage, Spa and a swim training to relax and enjoy the sun.

Day 6: "There is only one climb and it's Sa Calobra ."

Sa Calobra 110 km 2500 m elevation gain. The climb: 10 km 7.5 perfect average

A killer for heart legs and glucose level!

You reach Sa Calobra after 50 km  and 6 climbs

Integration: Couple of gels already in the system by 50 km

Despite the wise decision to do only 1 unit for breakfast at 7.15 am

The glucose dropped at 12 pm from 250 mg/dL to 190 mg/dL

Which I used to integrate with some long lasting carbohydrates

At 13.30 the glucose drops again as i am on the climb

From 350 I find myself at 130 in less than 30 minutes

I prevented a further drop with 2 gels .

On top of the hills I felt like a queen, reaching that summit is more than a normal achievement is an achievement with Diabetes.

The ride is not over yet,

10 km of rolling hills before the next stop.

The glucose drops again from 160 to 79

In the meantime I have the fast reaction to integrate with 2 gels again

This time the hypoglycemia feelings are really big

I feel dizzy tired , weak.

I sat down , have a cola and a sandwich. I want to give up, I am done.

As expected, I was without insulin since 7.15 am

The glucose spikes to 300 mg/dL again

But the ride is not over, 40 km to go.

What shall I do?

Correct? Normal correction? Less? More?

I decide to go for 1 unit of insulin.

From 350mg/dL  I drop to 150 mg/dL at the end of the 40 km.

Note: Usually 1 unit corrects 40 mg dL of my glucose, this time 200 md dL for one unit.

This is the power of physical activity.

This is the scary part of physical activity.

This is the challenge of 8 hours of bike ride

This is the challenge of endurance sports and Diabetes.

Short and hard is not the problem,

The real game goes to the endurance sports.

Day 7

Sprint Triathlon 🏃‍♀️

Squid Game Team, only one wins.

Brilliant ideas to organize a triathlon with Squid games costumes and games.

My triathlon glucose management was brilliant!

For multiple reasons:

Was not a real race in my mind and this played  a huge difference mentally , avoiding my adrenaline and cortisol levels to spike up, resulting into hyperglycemia at the beginning of the race

During the swim, the glucose decreases from 200 mg/dL to 180mg/dL in only 13 minutes;

Which is still impressive considering the integration before the swim of 30g cho,

I injected only 1 unit of insulin for breakfast which had to cover 50g of cho.

The bike was a push, the run was easy.

Successfully brought home this final challenge! Thanks to my team!

What happened before, during and after the trips with the Mallorca people,

Stays in Mallorca ❤️

Sorry.
